Season four proved another epic instalment of historical series The Last Kingdom. Originally on BBC America, new episodes are set to continue on Netflix as England tries to fight back against the rule of the Vikings. A recent interview has spelled bad news for one of the show’s biggest villains.
Netflix picked up exclusive streaming rights for the medieval drama for the third season onwards.
Subscribers were thrilled to discover the series has been renewed for a fifth season for the streaming service.
Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, it is unsure when the acclaimed series’ new episodes will be completed.
Ahead of The Last Kingdom’s new outing, English star Adrian Schiller has teased a dark fate for his character, the influential and power-hungry nobleman Aethelhelm.
Aethelhelm was introduced in the third season and frequently clashed with the series’ protagonist, Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon) during his bout to reclaim Bebbanburg.
In season four, the nobleman became advisor for King Edward (Timothy Innes) and secretly conspired against the King’s illegitimate son.
After several nefarious ploys throughout season three and four, viewers have already predicted a sticky ending for Aethelhelm.
The series has proven a hit amongst Game of Thrones fans, and Adrian Schiller recently appeared on an episode of Westeros-themed podcast Winter Is Coming.
During the conversation, Schiller revealed he doesn’t expect Aethelhelm to last long in the next season.
He said: “It’s difficult to see how he can survive. When you’ve seen somebody who is basically plotting to screw over the main characters and the characters that you love, the dramatic morality demands that they have a painful demise. I would imagine that he’s probably headed that way.”
Although Aethelhelm has certainly made an impact on The Last Kingdom, he is essentially a secondary villain to threats such as King Alfred (David Dawson) and Eardwulf (Jamie Blackley).
However, given the elder has performed some of the most despicable acts of seasons three and four, fans are eager to see Aethelhelm get his comeuppance when the show returns.

Season four upped the stakes when Aethelhelm attempted to poison Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth), leaving her on the brink of death.
Schiller continued by hinting at Aelswith surviving the plot to kill her and outlined how the next season’s machinations could bring an end to his character.
He added: “I think what would be interesting would be for him to do quite well for two or three episodes and then have his attempt to kill Aelswith, which either he has at it again or he tries to get to the other kids or something. But anyway, he gets found out.
“I’d like to see him try and get out of it, and maybe get so close to getting out of it, that would be really cool.”
With his vast power and influence, Aethelhelm might be able to escape capture for some time, but Schiller knows The Last Kingdom viewers don’t want him to get off so easy.
Finally, he said: “I think probably what the fans would like to see is him being badly beaten up and left in a cell to rot for a while, and then executed!”
Production on season five will begin soon, but the 18-month production schedule is expected to be extended due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Last Kingdom is available to stream on Netflix.
