The explosive finale of The Handmaid’s Tale season three kept fans on the edge of their seats when June (played by Elisabeth Moss) was left clinging to life.
After smuggling over 50 children across the border to Canada, June was shot by a Gilead guard and lay bleeding in the arms of her fellow Handmaids.
Although most fans aren’t expecting June to be killed off in the new instalment, she may be spending the majority of season four recovering from her injuries.
Meanwhile, her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and friend Moira (Samira Wiley) are set to join the frontlines of the war as things heat up in Canada.
Luke has played a more domestic part in previous seasons by protecting June’s daughter Nichole from the nefarious Waterfords.
However, fans were given a glimpse of his capacity for vengeance when he landed a well-deserved punch on Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) in the penultimate episode of season three, Sacrifice.
During an interview with TVLine, O-T Fagbenle teased Luke may have even more moments to shine when the time comes to liberate June from her imprisonment in Gilead.
Fagbenle touched on Luke and June’s relationship before the patriarchal state took over, and explained how his character may feel a sense of guilt heading into the next season.
Fagbenle continued: “Also, I think Luke carries around a certain sense of responsibility for not being able to have done more to protect her. So he feels responsible on some level for all that’s happened to her.”
June and the resistance not only scored a major victory over Gilead in season three, the Waterfords could finally atone for their crimes in the next instalment.
Both Fred and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) are under scrutiny for their crimes by the Canadian authorities, and fans are eager to see them get their comeuppance.
Now Gilead is weaker than ever, Luke and the resistance are perfectly positioned to dismantle the oppressive system in season four.
The actor said: “I think his hope is increasing. I think, more than ever before, there are signs of cracks in the wall of Gilead.”
Finally, Fagbenle teased: “And he’s ready to smash through that, if he could muster a way.”
A new trailer revealed the first footage of season four and confirmed Luke and Moira are ready to take their activism behind-the-scenes to the next level when The Handmaid’s Tale returns.
