By Konstantin Bikos and Anne Buckle. When the Sun is close to the horizon on a sunny day, its light appears warmer and softer. This makes the golden hour, also known as the magical hour, popular with photographers and filmmakers. Rather, it refers to a state of natural lighting that is most common around sunrise and sunset. However, the warm sunlight that is characteristic for the golden hour most likely occurs when the Sun is between 6 degrees below and 6 degrees above the horizon. By this definition, the golden hour begins with civil dawn in the morning and ends with civil dusk in the evening.

Understanding Golden Hour, Blue Hour and Twilights
To get started, we have taken a guess at where you are on the planet and are displaying astronomical information about your present location below. We calculate sunrise and sunset times. You can choose a new location from the drop down menu to the right or by clicking on the map. You can explore the changing year by clicking on the calendar at the bottom of the page. I have chosen to define the Golden Hour as that period when the sun lies between the horizon and 6 degrees above. This definition of the Golden Hour more accurately accounts for the speed of the transition from day to night around the world at different times of year. Each time you click on the map or select a location from the list, I will calculate the transit of the sun through the sky and display it in the panel below the map. The Golden Hour is displayed around dawn and dusk unless you are too far north or south where the sun may be wholly above or below the horizon. Once you have selected a location, you can then explore how the Golden Hour shifts with the seasons by clicking on a new date in the calendar represented below the horizon line. Note that you need to hover your mouse over the yellow bands to see the details of the start and end times for each golden period during the day.
What time is golden hour is one of the most important questions you could ask when you want to level up your photography. These short moments after sunrise and before sunset are especially popular with portrait and landscape photographers, and probably the best time to take photos outside. Roughly speaking, the golden hour is the first hour of light after sunrise and the last hour of light before sunset. However, this is just an approximation. Depending on the season and your location the golden hour might be a lot shorter or longer. For example, if you are close to the equator where the sun rises quickly the golden hour might only last a couple of minutes. If you want to know exactly when Golden Hour is for a specific location there are some handy tools available online and as smartphone apps. Just enter a location and time and they will give you a plethora of information to plan your shoot. You can also use this handy sunset and sunrise calculator to get a rough estimate of what time the golden hour will be in the morning or evening. Then the first golden hour of the day will start just before sunrise for about an hour.
