Opening sacred space is a ceremonial practice used by shamans and healers all over the world. It is a calling in of spiritual help from all directions and aspects of spirit. The perceptive ones among us can feel an immediate shift in the energetic quality of the environment. Sacred space drowns out the distractions of the everyday modern world and brings us into to the present moment. It allows the shaman to easily step into the invisible world to perform healings, retrieve soul pieces, and create beautiful ceremonies. It is also a way of honoring spiritual allies and sacred mountains. A student of mine had recently experienced me opening sacred space during our workshop. It is a beautiful prayer, and many Shamanic practitioners around the world use their own versions of this incantation.

Shamans always begin healing ceremonies by opening sacred space. In this space we leave behind the affairs of ordinary life, the bustling world of meetings and schedules, and prepare to meet the divine. Sacred space allows us to enter our quiet inner world where healing takes place. Within sacred space our burdens become lighter, and we can be touched by the hand of Spirit.
How to Open Sacred Space
Whatever the reason is, the intention must carry an unyielding presence of love and focus for sacred space to open. When sacred space is created, the veils between the physical and spiritual worlds begin to thin and transformation ensues. At the heart of the Shamanic path is the contract to live in harmony with nature, self, community and spirit. While the Medicine Wheel varies by culture, it universally honors the core belief that all things on earth are living and all things are interconnected. The four directions, as taught through Native American knowledge, are deeply embedded with symbolism and guidance for transformation:.
Sacred space is a healing sphere that is pure, holy and safe. We can create sacred space and summon the healing power of the Divine, of nature anywhere on Earth. Much of our fear and pain derives from the feeling that the world is not a safe place for us. Within sacred space everyone is protected. When we open sacred space, we leave behind the affairs of ordinary life, the bustling world of meetings and schedules, and prepare to meet the Divine. Sacred space allows us to enter our quiet inner-world where healing takes place. Within sacred space our burdens become lighter, and we can be touched by the hand of Spirit.
