Monty’s golden retriever Nigel was a highlight for BBC Two viewers for years, with the pet pooch often accompanying the Gardeners’ World host on-screen. However, Nigel tragically died in May this year after “suddenly taking ill”, with Monty confirming the news in a statement via his Instagram page. However, Nigel’s memory will live on in Monty’s new book as the presenter has dedicated the text to him and opened up about the impact his pet had had on him to Lorraine on Friday.
Flicking through Monty’s new book, Lorraine noticed there was a tribute to Nigel on the front page, with the text dedicated to him.
“When you look inside,” Lorraine began, “You’ve dedicated it to someone, I’m saying someone because that’s what they are like,
“It’s Nigel, lovely Nigel, your dog,” she concluded.
Nodding along, an emotional Monty explained: “Well, he died the day after I wrote the last word,”
Lorraine let out an “awww,” as Monty continued: “He was with me every moment I was writing,
“Every moment I was working in the garden, every moment I was walking in the fields and the woods.
“So he was my constant companion, and he was a very present influence in the book, so this is for him.”
When Lorraine asked Monty about the recognition Nigel had gained over the years, the Gardeners’ World host admitted fans were more interested in the pet than him.
Lorraine asked: “Nigel was a star in his own right, seeing you on telly without him, or without your other two dogs,
“It just wouldn’t be right, you’ve got to be with your dogs.”
“Wherever I went people didn’t want to see me, they wanted to see Nigel,” Monty explained.
He added: “What was extraordinary was, everywhere in the world, I was stopped on the streets of Tokyo, ‘where’s Nigel, why isn’t he with you?’,”
He went on: “On a plane in Minnesota, ‘hey, why haven’t you got your dog?’ you know.”
Lorraine then complimented the Gardeners’ World star for paying tribute to his companion in such a sweet way.
“Awww,” she said. “It’s just such a lovely way to remember someone who was so important in your life.”
Monty announced the news of Nigel’s death earlier this year as he penned a heartbreaking statement via Instagram
