Lorraine Kelly, 60, was the first presenter to conduct the first interview with any Government minister for the first time in over two months after the likes of Matt Hancock, 41, decided to boycott Good Morning Britain earlier this year. The ITV chat show host interviewed the Health Secretary on numerous issues regarding the coronavirus crisis from face masks to NHS parking fees. However, she took a moment to grill the Conservative Party member on why his colleagues seemingly broke rules he had put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19 earlier this year. With the politician trying to remain professional and having been asked the question numerous times, the television veteran lashed out as she sought answers.
Mentioning how senior Government advisor Dominic Cummings, 48, flouted lockdown rules back in April and in reference to the new rules about face masks being worn in shops from July 24, Kelly said: “You said yesterday you wanted to give people more confidence.
“To feel the confidence you need to have trust and would you accept that one this time, trust has eroded and that’s because of lack of clarity.
“That’s because senior figures have flouted the rules,” she went on to add, with Hancock seen taking his head at the comments.
The host hit back: “I know you’re shaking your head but it’s true, they flouted the law. They didn’t just bend it, they smashed it to smithereens.
“A lot of people thought, ‘If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me’, and I think in some ways, you’re lucky the country has been so compliant.”
In response, the Health Secretary skirted past the issue directly and said: “We didn’t see that response to some of those media stories.
“We’ve seen fantastic compliance with the rules that have been needed by people across this country and that’s terrific.
“I know there were lots of questions about compliance with the rules but actually people have been really, really brilliant at following them.
“It’s in all of our interests to control the virus and to get it right down as science has learnt more about the virus, so we’ve update the rules and people totally understand this is a virus nobody knew anything about six months ago,” Hancock added.
Taking to Twitter, viewers commented on the interview with one writing: “Oh snap #lorraine You tell the health secretary!!!!”
Another added on the social media platform: “Matt Hancock talking to #lorraine and he just doesn’t accept they caused a problem. Shrugging his shoulders at the mention of Dom Cummings – deluded!!”
A third remarked: “Well done to @lorraine for a great interview with @MattHancock. Asking the very important questions.”
“Loving @reallorraine ripping @MattHancock a new one on #lorraine,” a third commented, whilst a fourth opined: “B***** heck Lorraine’s getting the questions in today lol #lorraine.”
After Kelly announced the Health Secretary would be on her show this morning, her GMB colleagues Ben Shephard, 45, and Charlotte Hawkins, 45, were aghast at the news.
“Did we hear breaking news that Matt Hancock is coming onto an ITV show?” the Tipping Point star asked.
Co-star and Classical FM presenter Hawkins added: “Can you ask him where he’s been all this time?” To which the television veteran replied: “I certainly shall.”
Indeed she did put the question to Hancock and he replied he “loved ITV,” before ending the interview with the presenter.
