In what could be a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act of and a bizarre incident in general, a peacock was accorded a funeral that is generally reserved for martyred army personnel and certain national figures. TOI reports that the Delhi police, on Friday, wrapped the dead peacock in the tricolour and buried it in a wooden box. While the police had rescued the bird from outside the High Court, it had succumbed to its injuries. Now, naturally, the question on everyone's mind is this - what is the protocol for a tricolour burial? It shall not be embroidered or printed upon cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or boxes. The first state funeral in Independent India was accorded to Mahatma Gandhi and while a tricolour burial is usually set aside for former and current Prime Ministers, union and state ministers, martyred soldiers and other such dignitaries, of late, a state funeral is accorded to anyone at the discretion of the state government. For instance, film legend and superstar extraordinaire Sri Devi was laid to rest wrapped in a tri-colour.
